I read yet another Facebook post about the situation in the U.S., written by an intelligent pro-democratic American with tens of thousands of followers. And the post ended on an optimistic note – that American society was about to wake up!
I am not at all convinced it will wake up. What is happening in the U.S. is not static, it is dynamic; not a situation, but a process.
And in the context of this dynamic, in the face of these challenges, American society observes what is happening largely passively and, in essence, with its eyes wide shut.
To me it is obvious: if a country faces serious problems with the quality of leadership and with the rationality of social actions, this is a very dangerous signal of pathology in both the political system and society itself.
Therefore, if there are no centrist, centripetal, binding forces that hold society together and marginalize extremism, it is very easy, quickly and suddenly, to reach a terrifying escalation of confrontation and intolerably deep fractures within society.
I do not know if Americans truly imagine that by letting the “madmen” play out their madness, and by practicing the sport of “closed eyes” with the patience for everything to fade away, things will somehow sort themselves out because, you see, the American democratic system this, the American democratic system that…
What an alarming and dangerous self-deception such an illusion could be.
It is highly likely, I repeat, that confrontation will escalate, that hostility, hatred, bitterness, and intolerance will grow to brutal proportions. But unfortunately for some, others hold power and command a colossal system of repression – powerful security forces, pliable intelligence services, and a judiciary that fancies itself holding God by the sleeve but may turn out to be a compliant tool for those who seize it.
The U.S. political system has never been subjected to such a sinister test of resilience. And the Science of Security teaches us that every system of security provision must be systematically diagnosed for vulnerabilities and subjected to continuous stress tests. Otherwise it softens, drifts aimlessly, fattens on inertia, punishes professionalism, neglects threats, and loses its instinct for self-preservation.
For the third time I say: not only do I not rule out, I fully allow for the escalation of confrontation in the U.S. to catastrophic levels, because of the mutual intolerance of the two main components of the political system – Democrats and Republicans.
This will generate dangerous centrifugal forces, “opening the gates” to one of two most realistic outcomes:
-- A deep chasm within society → the collapse of the U.S. and its transformation into DAS (Disunited American States).
or
-- A dictatorship by a small elite holding the controlling package of power, dictatorship over the entire society and expropriation of the political system.
And since the U.S. has no immune system against such a dictatorial pathology, it could very rapidly fall into the merciless grip of dictatorship – like a rotten fruit torn off by a comparatively gentle breeze of power and carried downward by the gravity of repression.
