WHY I AM A RADICAL PESSIMIST AND A MODERATE OPTIMIST

Lately, my writings here have revolved around several key points that shape my reasoning and conclusions.

First, Trump has made so many obvious failures and laughable, almost cartoonish mistakes that it’s becoming harder and harder for him to continue playing Putin’s tune like some seduced and abandoned maiden. The way he flatters, grovels, and panders to the Russian dictator, hoping for anything more than the absolute zero that his actions toward Russia have yielded so far—it’s pathetic beyond parody.

Second, Putin is cornered—both by the loss of initiative in the War and by Russia’s economy, which is collapsing not over months, but weeks. Add to that the growing war fatigue among Russians and the pitiful lack of progress on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Third, Europe is finally starting to realize that every delay in emancipating itself, every second wasted hoping Trump will snap out of it, is fatal—not only for Ukraine but for Europe itself. A New Europe is being conceived, and the question is: with the abysmal absurdity we have as a president in Bulgaria, a man woven from betrayal and submission to Putin—and with this mindless, slavish Russophilia among our people that borders on Putin-worship—will we Bulgarians have a place in this New Europe when it is born?

Fourth, Zelenskyy has found the right tone, the right posture. For the first time since the War began, he is at least partially seizing the initiative from the Bunker Rat King. He’s countering every move of the Bunker Beast (and Trump’s, too) with grace and strategy—as if in some ancient form of Chinese or Japanese martial art, using the aggressor’s momentum against him to outplay and even paralyze him.

In that sense—and only in that sense—I was both encouraged and troubled when I heard and read the ultimatum issued by the European quartet of leaders.

I was encouraged, because I remain firmly convinced that with Putin, under current conditions, one must speak only in ultimatums! Nothing else registers with him. Ultimatums strip him of the illusion that he’s calling the shots, that he’s deciding the rules of engagement and the terms of the game. With this ultimatum, the European four didn’t just change the rules—they changed the entire game. The ball was no longer merely in Putin’s court; it was in his goal box, as football fans would say—even if football in Bulgaria is scraping bottom, and our weakest champion in 50 years just made history by clinching the title so early.

But I was troubled, because I asked myself: will these four European leaders have the will and courage to follow through on this theoretically brilliant ultimatum? Or will it all just be another round of empty bravado and declarations they’re not ready to back up?

That’s why I was disappointed—despite understanding the reality—when they backed down. Disappointed because they had to hit something—if not the jaw, at least the flank—of the Bunker Beast!

That said, the situation is far from hopeless. I’d even call it good news for Ukraine, if not for the steady bleeding on the front lines, and the continued savage bombardments and murders of Ukrainian civilians.

There’s a disturbing mismatch between the speed at which Putin is being cornered and the toll—both material and human—that the Ukrainian society continues to pay. Every day without a ceasefire brings more deaths, in battle, in civil society, and even in Ukraine’s political life.

What makes me a radical pessimist is the imbecile in the White House. He’s ready to sell out even Israel—let alone Ukraine! Trump is Evil—mischievous, senile Evil. The good news is, he’s now being squeezed even by his spineless, shriveled Republican cronies. Maybe, just maybe, a few drops of reason will trickle into that greedy, dimwitted skull of his...

And what makes me a moderate optimist is that Putin is increasingly isolated—even within BRICS, even among his own. They’re alarmed that at this rate, he’ll bring about the collapse and disintegration of Russia itself—which is exactly what they *don’t* want.

They need a Russia that is:
– A raw-material appendage to Comrade Xi, the new overlord of the Global South & East;
– And a permanent threat to the Global North & West—just dangerous enough to keep the West anxious, humble, and desperate to “share” global leadership with the Global South & East.
