The great illusion of the 1990s was that the institutions of the Cold War would serve the post-Cold War era. But there is no way to effectively manage new processes with unchanged structures from a bygone time!
Now we are at a second turning point.
The previous one brought down the Iron Curtain between the West and the East. This one has raised an Iron Curtain within the West—between the two shores of the Atlantic.
In my view, we cannot continue with the old institutions. That would be ritual suicide!
NATO is dead, but no one has noticed. Without a shared Atlantic, there can be no Atlantic alliance.
The EU cannot move even an inch forward right now because it harbors cancerous states within it.
If I were young and a politician today, I would propose, explain, persuade, and fight for:
1. Renegotiating the EU and transforming it into an **Organization of the European Treaty (OET)**, consisting only of truly pro-European states—even if that means only 15-20 remain.
2. Establishing a security and defense instrument within or alongside the OET—**a European Security and Defense Alliance (ESDA)** with joint European armed forces.
3. The immediate inclusion of Ukraine in both the OET and ESDA.
4. Making the battle for a **European Bulgaria** the primary battle in Bulgarian politics.
I have no need for politicians who speak as democrats but compromise like political wheeler-dealers, serving as mere decorative geraniums in parliament.
I need young leaders—young in spirit and vision—who realize how little time is left before the next **napkin** is drawn, determining Bulgaria’s fate for the next 50 years!
Nothing else matters to me—not political bargains, not traps, not the balls tossed around parliamentary corridors, nor the media’s incessant chatter.
Perhaps the idea of a **European Bulgaria** is doomed.
But if I were 20-25 years younger and had the understanding I do now, I would fight to prevent the worst-case scenario from coming true.
It is not too late yet, but it will keep getting later!
